REM - Man on the Moon
When this song comes on the radio, I'm pretty sure I'm the only person around that likes it. Whoever I'm with usually changes the station, hoping for something better. Maybe REM irritates them, which if that's the case, I find myself in the awkward position of disagreeing with their opinion without blaming them. This song isn't cool or hip, nor raw and angry, nor a cheesy love acoustic ballad. Atleast one of those three usually appeals to someone that'd consider themself even the most remote fan of rock and roll.
There's one main reason at the heart of why I like this song. It's about the late Andy Kaufman, and I first heard this song when I watched his biographical movie (starring Jim Carrey) in the theaters when I was a child, probably about 11 years old. I remember liking the movie at the time, and therefore liking the song I associated with it. While in real life Andy was seen as a comedian that had strange moments of obscenity and lack of respect for others, this movie revealed the man behind those misunderstood actions of comic genius. What stuck out in my mind back then was a character in the movie mentioning how Andy would have a joke that was only funny to him and not the rest of the world. He was on the moon with his humor while we were all back here on Earth. The moon is a very lonely place to begin with. To be by yourself on it is even lonelier, and to know that no matter what you do someone is looking at you all the time would be in fact be comfortingly lonely.
I feel like we all have times when something is only funny or interesting to us, and to no one around us. I know I feel like that often enough to find a little bit of comfort in this song. Every time I hear this song I feel a little less lonely in terms of things like that. Even if I'm the only person that likes this song, that just might be the point. There's a man up there on the moon that is just as alone, and he's making jokes about it and that's how he deals with it. He plays board games, he makes puns, and he does impressions of Elvis. What I wonder the most is, there has to be a reason Andy never decided to come back to Earth. Maybe he couldn't, or maybe he didn't want to. My question for you is, if you made it to the moon, would you come back?
